Cardiac catheterization is a procedure to examine how well your heart is working. At the office of Alexander Kasatkin, MD, PC, our skilled professionals use this procedure to diagnose the overall health of your heart — and to identify any disease of the heart muscle, valves or coronary (heart) arteries.
During the procedure, a long narrow tube called a catheter is inserted into an artery or vein in your groin, neck, or arm. It is then threaded through your blood vessel until it reaches your heart. Once the catheter is in place, we will then use it to run diagnostic tests.
Our doctors are specially trained in this highly effective, advanced procedure, and are supported by a team of nurses and technicians in a hospital cardiac catheterization (cath) lab. Before the procedure, a nurse will put an IV (intravenous) line into a vein in your arm to administer a sedative to help you relax — but you will be awake and able to follow instructions.
The procedure is usually very safe and with few possible minor side effects. Based on our findings, we will evaluate and determine the need for further treatment with the goal of maintaining your good heart health.
